The very first oil lamp that I made was a gift to a very special friend of our family. It was taken out of the kiln this morning and handed over a few hours later.
But now I just wanted to show off how it turned out. In my eyes, an absolutely perfect combo – dark clay, dark glaze with golden microcrystals and a brass wick holder that all fits perfectly together.
Every time there is some anxiety firing up the kiln – how they all come out. Every time it’s exciting to peek inside the kiln before completely opening the kiln door. Here are some pictures of the result both from a distance and up close.
This glaze on the box likes only flat surfaces as its runny, but then it produces amazing play of light when light reflects through the cracks of the glaze.
Making a teapot is said to be the mother of all challenges. I admit it’s tough, but it’s also the most rewarding challenge of them all. When you make a teapot, you’re focusing on functionality and technical skills. It’s all about function and purpose first.
